How do you tailor a CV to a job description with AI?

Use the job description to choose which real experience to emphasize. Identify required skills, preferred qualifications and responsibilities, then connect each relevant requirement to evidence from your work. AI can help organize and rewrite that evidence; you still need to review every claim before sending the CV.

Read the vacancy before rewriting your CV

Build a short checklist from the original posting: responsibilities, required skills, preferred qualifications, experience, languages, location and work arrangements. Keep requirements separate from employer benefits. Do not turn a preferred skill into a mandatory one or assume an unspecified contract type.

For example, if a hypothetical posting asks for Python pipelines, SQL and stakeholder collaboration, look for projects that demonstrate those activities. Having used Python once does not establish several years of professional experience. A missing skill is a gap to assess, not a fact for AI to fill in.

  • Mark requirements you can support with evidence.
  • Keep dates, employers and qualifications accurate.
  • Describe contributions and outcomes you can explain in an interview.
  • Leave unknown information out rather than inventing it.

Keep one career profile, select evidence for each application

In Skillshift, contact details form the shared CV header. Your structured profile holds experience, projects, education, skills, languages and certifications. Keeping this source material current makes it easier to select relevant entries for different roles.

When you open Adapt my CV from a job, Skillshift carries the company, role, original URL and available job description into a new application. The generator uses your contact details and selected profile sections with that context. A separate CV version is linked to the application, so you can review what you prepared for that employer.

Review meaning, language and the exported document

Read the generated CV against both your profile and the source vacancy. Check responsibilities, seniority, dates, language proficiency and any quantified results. A fluent sentence can still imply experience you do not have. If a draft overstates your contribution, edit it before using it.

Then review the PDF, including page breaks, links, contact information and the language requested by the employer. In Skillshift the A4 layout is fixed; you can edit the content and inspect the resulting PDF. Keep the original job URL with your application so you can return to the source.

Know what AI assistance can and cannot establish

A tailored CV makes your relevant evidence easier to find. It does not guarantee that an employer's application system will accept it, that you meet every requirement or that you will receive an interview. Skillshift does not provide a verified employer-specific ATS score.

Creating a draft also does not submit an application to the employer. Follow the original application process yourself and keep your application status up to date. Signing in is required to save a profile, create CVs and track applications.

Questions and answers

Should I add every keyword in the job description?

Use the employer's terminology when it accurately describes your experience. Adding skills or experience you do not have would make the CV misleading.

Can I create a CV without choosing a vacancy?

Yes. Skillshift's CV library can generate a standalone CV from your contact details and career profile. An application-specific CV also uses the company, role and job-description context.

Does Adapt my CV send the application?

No. It prepares a CV version and an application record for you to review. You submit the application through the employer's own process.
