Your Impact: We are seeking an experienced Principal Systems Engineer lead Integration, Test, Evaluation and Acceptance activities for advanced electro-optical and infrared sensing systems within the GCAP environment. This is an important systems engineering leadership role, responsible for defining and executing the system integration and verification strategy from detailed design through integration, qualification, acceptance, and transition to production. The successful candidate will shape both physical and digital integration approaches, ensuring robust verification of complex multi-disciplinary systems in a highly demanding defence environment. The role offers the opportunity to influence next-generation sensing capability, working across national and international teams on technically challenging programmes. What you’ll do Integration & Test Leadership Define integration and verification approaches appropriate for late-lifecycle delivery, ensuring readiness for hardware/software integration, qualification, acceptance, and release. Develop and maintain the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) electro-optical / infrared sensing systems ITEA master plan, including integration sequencing, verification logic, dependencies, risks, and maturity criteria. Define progressive integration strategies from component, subsystem, equipment, and system-level verification through formal acceptance. Test Architecture & Systems Engineering Lead and define ITEA related strategy and associated systems artefacts including ITEA requirements. Develop the system integration and test architecture, ensuring testability is designed into the product architecture. Define verification architectures including: Physical integration environments Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments Synthetic/digital test environments Laboratory and field test configurations Ensure requirements, interfaces, performance budgets, and verification methods remain aligned throughout integration. Digital & Synthetic Environments Lead development of the EOIR strategy for digital and synthetic integration/test environments. Define model-based verification approaches that enable early risk reduction, accelerated integration, and increased defect discovery prior to hardware availability. Support digital thread adoption between requirements, architecture, interfaces, models, and verification artefacts. Stakeholder Coordination Liaise with the wider GCAP Test & Integration community to ensure consistency, reuse of best practice, and alignment of facilities, tooling, and processes. Coordinate integration activities across EOIR, subsystem teams, software, electronics, mechanical, detector, optics, and processing disciplines. Support design reviews, verification reviews, readiness reviews, qualification reviews, and customer acceptance activities. Risk & Delivery Identify integration and verification risks early and develop mitigation plans. Support programme planning, schedule development, cost estimation, and technical maturity assessments. Provide technical leadership and mentoring to systems engineers supporting ITEA activities. What you’ll bring Experience leading system integration and test activities on complex engineered products, ideally within highly regulated industries (e.g. aerospace, defence, sensing, or other safety-critical environments). Proven experience in late lifecycle delivery, particularly post-critical design review integration, qualification, acceptance, and release. Strong systems engineering background covering requirements, architecture, interfaces, verification, and acceptance. Desirable Experience Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE). Experience working with digital twins, synthetic environments, HIL/SIL environments, or virtual integration frameworks. Experience within electro-optical / infrared sensing systems (EOIR), mission systems, or sensor fusion environments. Experience defining test equipment, test environments, and facility requirements. Next generation ESCAN radars are now in full scale production and being delivered to our customer on the front-line, where we strive to provide key functionality and capability to meet the customer operational requirements We are recruiting for a Lead Systems Engineer to lead the operational evaluation for the Typhoon ECRS Mk0 (ESCAN) radar against the operational Fitness for Purpose (FFP) criteria. FFP is a non-contractual framework that has been agreed between Euroradar and our purchaser, BAESYSTEMS, to aid the prioritisation of System Problem Reports (SysPRs) with the aim of reaching an acceptable level of product maturity against agreed operationally relevant criteria. The Lead Systems Engineer will lead a team responsible for: Product gap analysis against operationally relevant scenarios Problem Report identification and sentencing Problem Report prioritisation Identifying when maturity goals are met. Supporting compliance statements against the Specification Co-ordinate the agile ‘on-train’ maturity assessment activities through the Product Manager and technical leadership team, which will be delivered by those SMEs. Planning and presentation of maturity point reviews with key internal and external stakeholders. Identifying clear gaps in product maturity and support the sentencing of SySPRs As Lead Systems Engineer, you will work within the Typhoon delivery sector, leading and co-ordinating the Leonardo UK Systems Engineering activity for evaluating the Mk0 radar product maturity for the Entry-Into-Service product. There are two software development releases planned to deliver an operationally capable radar that meets the specification. The candidate will need to be highly motivated and able to define and lead activities for producing maturity metrics and analysis tools to present product maturity to the Chief Engineer and Technical Director to ensure that we focus on the correct changes to meet FFP and compliance objectives. This role presents an opportunity to be at the heart of the success of the Typhoon ECRS Mk0 Radar System, achieving customer satisfaction with this product. Key Skills: Experience of Radar Systems Design and/or Qualification at a Lead Engineer level. Your Impact The Lead Systems Engineer is responsible for the technical leadership, planning, and execution of systems engineering activities across a programme or major project. Maintain configuration control of requirements, models, and verification evidence via tools such as CAMEO, DOORS and TCU. Administration of MBSE and account management. Provide support to the definition and planning of verification and validation activities, including integration and acceptance.     Job Description: Test Solution Design Engineer Salary: £44, 000 to £71,400 Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with broad bands. The salary range shown reflects the approved grade band for this role, or a narrower hiring range published within that band, and is benchmarked against the external market. Exceptions above the standard range are managed through governance controls to protect internal equity. If you like the sound of delivering electronic test solutions for platforms such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, then we would like to hear from you. We are looking for an experienced Test Solution Design Engineer to join our well-established Test Engineering community at our Edinburgh based site. You will play a pivotal role in the design, development and integration of test solutions that supports our industry-leading contribution to Radar programmes and wider defence capabilities. As a Test Solution Design Engineer, you will: Support the creation and delivery of test solutions within a defined work package area, ensuring that the solution meets all stakeholder requirements across performance, cost and schedule. Capture, analyse and mature stakeholder needs, associating priority, interest and influence to determine the optimum technical approach to solving complex engineering challenges. Design and development of electronic hardware solutions across the full design lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to integration, verification and qualification. Produce high-quality design documentation and technical reports, ensuring configuration control and compliance with relevant standards and processes. Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure architectural alignment with other elements of the programme. Contribute to the resolution of emerging technical issues by proposing and driving through robust solutions, escalating more complex risks and supporting the identification of opportunities and risk mitigation strategies. Develop, coach, mentor and upskill engineers within the wider engineering community, promoting best practice in electronic design.
