Within Leonardo's Space Division, e-GEOS , an ASI (20%) and Telespazio (80%) company, is one of the leading international operators in the Earth Observation and geospatial information sector and offers a unique portfolio of application services. We're expanding our engineering capabilities around cloud-native geospatial platforms and Earth Observation (EO) services. We are looking for a Geospatial Platform Engineer to help design, develop and operate scalable software systems that enable discovery, access, processing and integration of geospatial and EO data across cloud and hybrid environments. Within the " Chief Technological Innovation Office " organizational unit at the Rome office we are looking for a resource to cover the position of Geospatial Platform Engineer This role contributes to the development of APIs, data services, geospatial catalogues and user-facing applications, while supporting the deployment and operation of services on modern cloud-native infrastructure. You will work closely with senior architects, software engineers, scientists and external partners to translate business and technical requirements into reliable, interoperable and production-ready solutions. You will join a multidisciplinary engineering team and progressively take ownership of platform components, architecture decisions and integration activities as your experience grows. This is an early-career position with a clear growth path toward technical ownership of geospatial platform architecture and cloud-native service development What you'll do Support activites of the Commercial User Terminal (CUT) as an operational platform for EO acquisition planning, Ground Segment interfaces, status management and decision traceability. Evolve and integrate existing platforms such as SEonSE, AWARE, MapCy, AgriGeo, brAInt and CUT within the modular GIC architecture. Develop reusable platform services, APIs and integration components while preserving each product’s domain-specific capabilities. Apply open geospatial standards, including STAC and OGC APIs, to build interoperable catalogue, search and data-access capabilities. Work with modern cloud-native geospatial formats and tooling, including COG, Zarr, GDAL/rasterio and Xarray. Build and integrate REST APIs, backend services and data processing components following established software engineering practices. Explore and prototype automation opportunities, including AI-assisted and agent-based solutions supporting data curation, operational workflows, testing and documentation. Contribute to user-facing capabilities with a focus on usability, including API-first services, notebook-based workflows and interactive geospatial applications. Participate in the design and implementation of data ingestion, transformation and integration workflows across multiple systems and providers. Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing processes and software delivery workflows. Troubleshoot performance, configuration and integration issues across platform components with support from senior team members. Collaborate with internal teams and technical suppliers on integration activities, technical reviews and delivery milestones. Produce and maintain technical documentation, software design specifications, requirements analyses and operational procedures. Stay informed about emerging technologies and best practices in cloud-native geospatial platforms, workflow orchestration and AI-enabled automation. Skills: Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Geoinformatics or a related field, or equivalent experience. Up to 5 years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, geospatial applications or related technical fields. Strong software development skills, preferably in Python. Understanding of modern web application and API architectures, including REST APIs, authentication mechanisms and basic microservice patterns. Working knowledge of at least one cloud platform such as AWS or Azure. Familiarity with container technologies and Kubernetes-based deployments. Understanding of software configuration management, version control and collaborative development practices. Familiarity with DevOps principles and development toolchains, including GitLab, GitLab CI/CD and Atlassian products. Ability to analyse technical challenges, investigate issues methodically and contribute to effective solutions. Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, architects, scientists and external stakeholders. Demonstrated willingness to learn rapidly and progressively take ownership of technical responsibilities. Good written and spoken English. Nice to have Familiarity with Earth Observation, remote sensing or geospatial data management. Experience working with STAC, OGC APIs, COG, Zarr, Rasterio, GDAL, Xarray or related geospatial technologies. Familiarity with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures and supporting platform components. Experience integrating vector databases such as pgvector, Qdrant, Weaviate or Milvus. Exposure to AI infrastructure, model serving platforms, inference APIs or LLM-enabled applications. Experience with workflow orchestration platforms such as Airflow, Argo Workflows or Prefect. Familiarity with GitLab, GitLab CI/CD and the Atlassian ecosystem. Awareness of cybersecurity, secure software development and cloud security best practices. Experience working with observability stacks such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry or similar technologies. Contributions to open-source projects or participation in geospatial, cloud or AI communities. We are looking for a Geospatial Platform Engineer to help design, implement, and operate the software platforms that enable scalable AI and EO solutions in production. Within the Chief Technological Innovation Office organizational unit we are looking a resource to cover the position of Geospatial Platform Engineer - AI focus at the Rome office. This role is responsible for developing and operating the underlying data, platform, and integration capabilities that support modern EO applications, including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems, agent-based workflows, geospatial data catalogs, and cloud-native data services. You'll work closely with AI Engineers, Remote Sensing Scientists, Product Owners and external suppliers to transform prototypes into reliable, secure and scalable production services. You'll be based in Rome and report to the reference technical lead, who will mentor you as you progressively take ownership of platform design and architecture decisions. This is an early-career position with a clear growth path toward technical ownership of our cloud-native geospatial and AI platform stack. What you'll do Introduce reusable AI capabilities across e-GEOS products and platforms, including SEonSE, AWARE, MapCy, AgriGeo, brAInt and other GeoInformation Centre services. Transform existing prototypes and product-specific AI functions into secure, scalable and maintainable platform services and products. Build shared data and knowledge pipelines combining EO data, metadata, documents and operational information. Develop AI-assisted search, analysis, workflow automation, reporting and decision-support capabilities. Build and integrate REST APIs, microservices and backend components that provide access to geospatial data, AI services, metadata catalogues and operational workflows. Support deployment and operations of software and AI services on Kubernetes-based hybrid and cloud environments. Contribute to platform capabilities enabling orchestration of AI agents, RAG, Vector Database, Large Language Models (LLMs), Geospatial Foundation Models (GFMs) and external services. Develop CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks and software delivery processes following DevOps and Platform Engineering principles. Collaborate with AI Engineers to transition experimental prototypes into production-grade solutions with appropriate reliability, scalability and security controls. Investigate and resolve performance bottlenecks, integration challenges and operational issues across platform components. Draft and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, operational procedures and integration specifications. Contribute to evaluating emerging technologies in cloud-native geospatial computing, platform engineering, workflow orchestration and AI infrastructure. Skills Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Geoinformatics or a related field, or equivalent experience.
