ESTRACK is ESA's global network of ground stations supporting deep-space and LEO satellite communications. As a Ground Operations Engineer (GOE), you'll be assigned to a Spacecraft Mission operations team, providing engineering support to prepare and maintain ground operation facilities—both during new mission onboarding and throughout live mission operations. Key Responsibilities The core services of Ground Operations Engineering are as follows: Validation of end-to-end ground segment configuration for critical and routine remote operations. Leading Mission Readiness tests to validate operational procedures for critical and routine operations. Generation of operational configuration of mission-specific documentation (e.g. Ground Operation Procedure, Remote and local Procedures, training material) during the lifetime of the mission. Investigations of anomalies (incidents analysis and problem management) affecting the Ground station services to any supported mission. Interfacing with ESTRACK Network Operations Centre (NOC) and Ground Station. Maintenance and Operations teams; interfacing with external station partners. Preparation of the ground segment for launch and early orbit phases of new missions. Provide training and procedural documentation for NOC operations. Supporting the development and evolution of the NOC facilities and operational concepts. Essential Skills and Qualifications University degree or equivalent education in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Telecommunications Engineering. Experience in the Telecommunication Engineering domain (i.e. RF expertise), including practical experience as an RF engineer. Broad understanding of IT Systems. Configuration control expertise (i.e., knowledge and experience in configuration management). Desirable Skills Some experience with deep space and 15m antennas. Some experience with Ground Station operations. Familiarity with Satellite support ground facilities control processes and set-up. Some experience dealing with internal & external interfaces and industrial suppliers. Familiarity with ground segment maintenance and operations. Furthermore Start date 01/10/2026 or 01/01/2027. The future post holder will participate in the preparation of ESTRACK for upcoming missions and support to the flying ones in aspects related to the ground station engineering and space link communications and tracking, approached from a system perspective. Responsibilities / Tasks The daily tasks and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Active participation in ground station developments, i.e. new antenna projects and upgrade of existing antennas, by providing support to the definition of technical specifications and statement of works, participation to procurement in the role of expert, support to design reviews as well as support to factory and site acceptance tests and supporting preventive, predictive and corrective maintenances. Design and documentation creation and review (Statement of Work, Technical Specifications, technical trade-offs, Technical Notes) Monitoring of ground station data provision and archiving, providing performance assessments in response to operational incidents. Qualifications Essential Skills University degree in Electronic Engineering, Telecommunication, or similar Knowledge in the ground station domain: ground stations architecture and design Experience in: ground station systems engineering. development and upgrade of complex systems, including testing and validation communication systems involving e.g. modulation, demodulation, coding techniques, signal/data processing. TT&C systems and their interfaces. Experience of programming: e.g. Python, C++, Matlab. Key Responsibilities The general activities to be supported by this service are: Execution of end-to-end routine and contingency operations for the spacecraft, including: Preparation, monitoring and remote control of the spacecraft. Monitoring of telemetry data, health checks of spacecraft equipment, preparation and execution of operations in accordance with established procedures, and verification of results. Monitoring ground station passes and ensuring successful command uplink and telemetry downlink. Responding to alarms and out-of-limit conditions and performing predefined recovery actions when required. Troubleshooting using established procedures and preparation of anomaly and operational reports. Supporting 24/7 routine operations, including night, weekend and holiday shifts, for missions requiring continuous coverage. Maintaining mission logs and performing shift handovers to ensure continuity of operations. Coordinating with Analysts, SOEs, SOMs and on-call engineers during anomaly investigations, recovery activities and special operations. Additional tasks as defined by the supervisor. Essential Skills and Qualifications A university degree in a Science or IT-related discipline (electronics, physics, computing, programming, process control, ground station operations) is preferred. A strong technical-oriented background.
