A key player in major strategic programs at the global level, Leonardo is a technology and industrial partner to governments, defence administrations, institutions, and businesses Within the Engineering area, we are seeking a Trainee RSD&D (Structural Analysys on Composite Mat) for our office in Cascina Costa (VA) . The trainee will be trained in various activities related to the area. Scope: Explore an integrated experimental and numerical validation workflow for the material cards adopted by Abaqus solver in support of typical explicit aerospace simulations. The work will initially focus on experimental testing of typical laminated composite specimen, in addition to typical force displacement time histories acquisition to compute engineering constants, also video recordings need to visual report damage initiation mode and evolution. The same geometry and layup of the tested specimen will be reproduced with an Abaqus model and run with the explicit solver, objective is to replicate engineering stress vs strain curves as well as failure location/extension vs time. This task will necessary need to deepen understanding of the available Abaqus explicit solver damage initiation models (Hashin, Larc05, Ply Fabric) and similarly damage evolution models (Hashin, Ply Fabric) selecting and showing evidence of the most accurate model and parameters for the scope of the proposed workflow. Activities: Bibliography research Abaqus damage initiation models for composite applicable to 3d elements, priority to Solid Continuum Shells CS8R and CS6R which are compatible with both implicit and explicit solver. Abaqus damage evolution models for composite. Academic work on damage energy release rate measurement and modelling, including effects of strain rate and effects of characteristic length associated to mesh dependency. Experimental (suggested ref ASTM D3039) Tension specimens manufacturing, three types of specimens are to be tested: 0, 90 and +-45. It is suggested to test and manufacture a minimum quantity of three per each type. Raw material or specimens supply from LHD is a possibility but will unlikely be compatible with a MSc thesis schedule and time constraints, it is highly suggested specimens are manufactured within university facility adopting available material, preferably glass or carbon unidirectional. Dimensional checks for confirmation of as manufactured geometry and layup NDT to confirm no major defects are present in the test specimen are nice to have, UT to confirm no voids presence or x-ray to confirm fiber alignment if available. Testing and data acquisition at university facilities. Post testing inspection of damage and photographic reporting. Simulation Specimen modelling to reflect as manufactured state, LHD can provide a model template to speedup simulation tasks. Analytical assessment of the energy release levels to be assigned in the simulation based on bibliography research. Evaluate experimental-simulation correlation in terms of time-elongation, time-force, engineering strain-stress curves, location and extension of the damage. Verify which Abaqus material models perform and correlate better with experimental data. Possible additional work Test and simulate additional stacking layup specimens (e.g. +-45/0/-+45) Test and simulate compression specimens Test and simulate ENF tests specimens Requirements: - currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program - strong aptitude for teamwork - advanced knowledge of the English language (B2/B1) - Ability to work in team - Problem solving oriented WHAT WE OFFER Engagement, recognition of skills, and a strong focus on people's well-being and safety are the cornerstones of our corporate culture.
